SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – The Soo Locks Children’s Museum (SLCM) is proud to announce that it has been awarded a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council (MACC) to support its ongoing construction and operational costs. This prestigious award marks a significant milestone in the museum’s mission to provide a hands-on, interactive environment that inspires curiosity and strengthens community connections within the Eastern Upper Peninsula.
The funding will be instrumental in offsetting the costs associated with the museum’s current construction efforts and essential operations as it prepares to open its doors to the public. The SLCM aims to provide much-needed educational and recreational resources for families in an under-served area. “We are incredibly grateful to the Michigan Arts and Culture Council for their support,” said Raquel Fernandez-Earns, Ph.D., President of the Board of Directors for the Soo Locks Children’s Museum. “This grant allows us to continue building a space where children can explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) through play, fostering a lifelong love of learning and discovery”.
The SLCM is dedicated to creating a welcoming space that reflects the rich cultural history of the region, including the significance of the St. Mary’s River and Anishinaabe traditions. Once completed, the museum will feature eleven planned exhibits, offering children and families engaging opportunities to learn, play, and connect in a vibrant community-centered environment.
