  • The Board was excited to welcome Laura Downwind and Kathryn Maninga as new members. The current members are list on the About Us page.
  • We are now members of the Chamber of Commerce.

  • We are very excited to share some of the design charrette images for our floor plan and exhibits!

  • The Capital MCACA grant that we had applied for was unfortunately not selected for funding. There was some very useful feedback from the reviewers, though, that we plan to utilize as we apply again in the future for that and other grants.

September 2021

  • The Board and several community members had some great meetings with Bluewater Studios as they helped develop a plan for the exhibits along with design charrettes which will be shared soon.
  • The Dueling Pianos fundraising event has again been postponed due to health concerns. The new date is April 9, 2022.

  • The Board was excited to welcome Sheldon Kranendonk, Carrie Schneider, and Kat Jacques as new members.

  • Due to COVID-19, we’re postponing the Dueling Pianos event to keep our community safe.  We will work with Kewadin Casino and Dave Caruso & Piano Wars to identify a new date as soon as things settle down.

  • It was great to see everyone for Engineer’s Day that stopped by to play games 🙂 Special thanks to St. Mary’s School for the use of their carnival games.
  • SLCM was drawn as the recipient of the Women with Hearts Fundraiser. We are honored to receive the support from such a great group and great event!

  • The Dueling Pianos fundraiser has now been rescheduled for September 17, 2021 at Kewadin Casino.
  • A number of the Board members attended ACM’s InterActivity 2021 Conference. The conference behind held virtually enabled a lot more participation and a lot was learned.

  • We now have a location! We are leasing the space at 223 W. Portage Ave. next Second Childhood.

  • Mrs. Becky Mitchell, co-founder of Kids ‘N’ Stuff, met virtually with the Board to discuss her experience starting a children’s museum. The group was very appreciative for all the great insights she shared.

  • We are thankful to have had the opportunity to present at an EUP Great Start Luncheon this past week on behalf of the Soo Locks Children’s Museum @SLCMKids. It was great to hear of all that @EUPGreatStart is doing to support families!

  • It was great to see the enthusiasm over the 3D printer and children’s museum in general from those that stopped by the booth at Engineer’s Day. Thanks to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for organizing the event for the community and visitors.

A dedicated group of people have put considerable time and effort into the project thus far. Achievements to date include:

  • Fundraising of over $110,000 with several sizable grant applications in process,
  • Securing a prime location to lease in Downtown Soo near the locks,
  • Working with Bluewater Studios to develop concept sketches and an exhibit plan for the building,
  • Organizing community meetings to build support,
  • Completing a feasibility study,
  • Obtaining 501(c)(3) non-profit status,
  • Designing a website and developing a social media presence,
  • Crafting a business plan to ensure the SLCM’s financial sustainability, and
  • Creating a general layout of enriching exhibits for children of very young to ~pre- or early teenage ages to enjoy.

The group is presently seeking donations and other funds to purchase exhibits and hire an executive director.
